BORDER BASH ARAGON GRAVEL CAMP 2023

The Border Bash Aragon 2023

Great adventures often stem from meaningful connections, and my journey to the Border Bash Aragon Gravel Camp 2023 was no exception. It began in the summer of 2022, when I spent a memorable few months in Amsterdam and crossed paths with James Crossley and Simon Alvarez Belon. As members of the Amsterdam-based cycling collective Platte Gang, their passion for cycling and community was infectious. They were also involved with BYCS, a global organisation promoting cycling in 15 cities, including initiatives like the Youth Bicycle Mayor program.

Through our rides and conversations, we bonded over a shared love of cycling, teamwork, and pushing boundaries. When James and Simon introduced me to the idea of the Border Bash Aragon, it immediately piqued my interest. Back in London, I discussed the challenge with my close friend and regular cycling partner, Thomas Rook. Weekly rides around Regent’s Park and participation in sportives like the Red Bull Timelaps and Dunwich Dynamo were already part of our routine, so taking on this gravel camp felt like a natural progression. Tom was on board, and before long, we were heading to Spain to join James and Simon on this unforgettable adventure.

The Border Bash Experience

The Border Bash Aragon Gravel Camp was not just about cycling it was about community. Nestled in northeastern Spain near the French border, the camp offered riders an opportunity to explore stunning landscapes, forge new friendships, and embrace challenges together. The event unfolded over three days. It began with a 52km “Blind Bash,” a social ride designed to introduce riders to the breathtaking scenery and each other. Day two offered routes ranging from 40km to 115km, catering to riders of all levels and allowing us to navigate gravel paths, medieval ruins, and fields of vibrant poppies.

Collaboration on and off the Saddle

Cycling through Spain’s rugged terrain wasn’t without its challenges. Over the course of 200km, we faced four punctures, three emotional meltdowns, and countless moments of fatigue. But these trials became opportunities for collaboration and connection. Whether it was fixing a flat tire, encouraging each other up steep climbs, or simply sharing a laugh during a river crossing, the experience underscored the power of teamwork.

The event’s flexible structure also encouraged adaptability. With Komoot GPX routes offering built-in “cheat codes” for the tougher sections, we learned to embrace the journey on our own terms. This approach mirrored the camaraderie of gravel biking itself: a blend of serendipity, determination, and collective spirit.

Reflections and Revelations

For me, the Border Bash wasn’t just about cycling; it was about growth. It was a reminder that shared experiences build stronger bonds and that embracing challenges with an open mind can lead to profound personal and collective transformation.

Here’s to many more adventures on and off the bike.
